Hello,

The figurative, a genre neglected in France for years, even rejected by some schools of fine arts, finds its place in galleries, museum collections, salons ... In September 2021, Art Paris has also made a of its central themes and our newsletter this month is dedicated to it.

To introduce this focus on the figurative, we offer you two texts by Charles Baudelaire, one on the landscape, the other on the portrait:

“If such a collection of trees, mountains, waters and houses, which we call a landscape, is beautiful, it is not by itself, but by me, by my own grace, by the idea or the feeling that I attach to it. It is enough to say, I think, that any landscape gardener who does not know how to translate a feeling by an assembly of vegetable or mineral matter is not an artist. I know well that the human imagination can, by a singular effort, conceive for a moment nature without man, and all the suggestive mass scattered in space without a contemplator to extract the comparison, the metaphor and the allegory. . It is certain that all this order and all this harmony nonetheless retain the inspiring quality which is providentially deposited in it; but, in this case, for lack of an intelligence which it could inspire, this quality would be as if it were not…. ”

"A portrait ! What could be simpler and more complicated, more obvious and more profound? If La Bruyère had been deprived of imagination, would he have been able to compose his Caractères, the material of which, however, so obvious, offered itself to him so complacently? And so restricted that one supposes any historical subject, what historian can flatter himself of painting and illuminating it without imagination? The portrait, this seemingly modest genre, requires immense intelligence. The artist's obedience must undoubtedly be great, but his divination must be equal. When I see a good portrait, I guess all the efforts of the artist, who must have seen first what was being seen, but also guess what was hiding. I compared him earlier to the historian, I could also compare him to the actor, who out of duty adopts all the characters and all the costumes. Nothing, if one is willing to examine the matter, is indifferent in a portrait. The gesture, the grimace, the clothing, the decor itself, everything must serve to represent a character…. ”
