Biography

Poumi LESCAUT paints, sings, dances, choreographs, writes.

“My painting draws its inspiration from Nature, the cosmos and the dance of the energies that I perceive in life.

Saying something about yourself and the world through painting is a way to make visible what cannot be said in words, to exorcise energetic traces, to reveal buried memories, to leave mount visions received from the many facets of existence and life experiences, of the elusive and the cosmos in which we live and which passes through us.

Life, dance, its rhythms, its spirals of energies, its internal architecture, the concentration on a single eye in the center of the body, Nature, meditation are my guides, as well as my energy therapy work.

And of course the discovery of the cultures of the world which nourished me, surprises, jostled by the mirrors they held out to me, to reveal other spaces.  Their scents, their colors have infiltrated my imagination ...

To dare to enter a blank canvas, it is the silence of nature that gives me the inner void that I need to enter a blank canvas.

Creativity is everywhere in life and it is by changing the way things look that they recreate themselves, take on new life.

The practice of several artistic languages throughout my life - each of which has its own laws - obliges to find the thread that connects them, and yoga, which precisely means “link”, contributes to this.

But it is the interior dance that activates all these languages, because when you are a dancer you remain a dancer all your life, it then spreads everywhere ... while fading to let things appear ... Connecting visible and invisible ... "

“Born in Antwerp in Belgium, she lives and works in Paris and in the Perche when she is not traveling the world. “

“I have been dancing since I was young, and I lived in Brussels until I was 22. After having participated in the creation of “Romeo and Juliet” by Maurice Béjart, I left Brussels for Paris for good. Dancing was a sort of absolute necessity, the sap that kept me alive.

The painting was present very young because of my deep friendship with the artist Evelyne Axell, I often posed for her and she was the first who asked me to teach her dance (I was then 18 years old)! This means that she opened my eyes wide to plastic art and her very feminine vision of approaching it.

Seeing life as a dance, it has spread in all these forms of expression: painting, singing, writing; to date creation is ONE whatever the language. The axis that brings together order and harmonizes the whole is kundalini yoga.

The transmission through the pedagogy of yoga, dance and singing, combined with a training in psychology led me to art therapy, a source of inspiration as much for my creation as for the one who inscribes the canvas in its frame. of life.

In 1975 my first ballet company was born which performed in France (including a residency at the Opéra Comique de Paris), in Europe, in New York, in India, in Africa, in the West Indies… My intimate relationship with Jean-Michel Folon - who made the decorations for my ballet “THIRST! »- also influenced me by his poetic way of seeing the world, of spreading color and opening up space.

India is my second homeland, I danced there in all the cities with a theater, and taught Indian artists in various regions, which also made me meet painters - including Piraji - and architects strongly challenged by my creation.

But it is above all the magic of this country that has permeated my imagination and therefore my painting. I often worked in the winters in India in Auroville, especially with the “Auroville Theater Group”, my research led to the creation of educational programs: Atelier-Corps-Théâtre and Voice Therapy.

Writer, I relate my meeting with an extraordinary being in the book “Balayogi l'Alchimie du Silence” which has just been published for the third time, the incredible (but true) story which completely transformed my view of the world ...

Later it is a collection of haikus poetry "singing the silence" and following my friendship with Carolyn Carlson she made the calligraphies. This little collection saw the light of day right next to my studio… inspired by my cat.

A book on 50 years of research through body language was recently published by Accarias l'Originel: “Dance! The body delivers knowledge ”a journey that goes from creation to pedagogy, to art therapy, to the link between various artistic languages, to the opening of another space through Silence.

I also recorded 5 albums of sacred oriental songs given in concert, which is to say the importance of music in my painting, with very eclectic tastes, however, it is also she who takes me.

After painting as an autodidact, I worked in Paris at the Nicolas Poussin workshop with Jean-Claude Athane mainly drawing for several years, then with the painter Gérard Boucher the oil technique.
My mentor is Zao Wou-ki who is for me, the cosmic painter par excellence. I often feel his presence when I work ...
My studio has been in the middle of nature for 18 years in the Perche where the presence of birds and the silence of trees and stars are essential for me to paint ...

All these influences and languages come together in a furnace where opposites merge to explore their unity… ”
