La mimesis (imitation of the real) has long been an important part of art. Le portrait/selfportrait, the landscape, the still lifes or religious painting are examples of figurative genres seeking to reproduce reality. The Renaissance, Baroque, hyperrealism and realism are examples of artistic styles of realistic figurative art, in which the painter seeks to represent the real.

Figurative art can also be the representation of an unreal world born from the artist's sole imagination. Movements likeexpressionism, symbolismor Surrealism are part of this movement of figurative art.

Finally, figurative art can be the distorted and interpreted (subjective) representation of the real world. The cubism is an example of this desire to represent real objects (figures, guitars, still life, etc.) through the filter of the artist's subjectivity.
