“Yes, I believe that there is really only sculpture, that which can only be said by sculpture. Anything that can be said by painting, it is better to say it by painting. "The heads, the characters are only a continual movement of theinside, outside, they are constantly remaking themselves, they do not have a real consistency, their transparent side. They are neither cube, cylinder, sphere, nor triangle. They are a mass in movement, pace, shape changing and never quite graspable. And then they are as if linked by an interior point which looks at us through the eyes and which seems to be their reality, a reality without measure, in a space without limits and which seems to be other than that in which the cup stands in front of me or created by this mug."

From September 28, 2021 to January 2, 2022, at the invitation of the Petit Palais, Jean-Michel Othoniel takes over the entire museum and its garden. This is the artist's largest solo exhibition in Paris since his “My Way” retrospective at the Center Pompidou in 2011.
For the occasion, in addition to 70 new works, Othoniel invents The Narcissus Theorem : a man-flower, who by reflecting himself, reflects the world around him. According to Gaston Bachelard, “narcissism is not always neurotic, it also plays a positive role in the aesthetic work. Sublimation is not always the negation of a desire.
